Diamonds are forever, but only when you know how to set them! When it comes to that, Harry Winston is one of the experts in this field. Although they have a firm footing in the world of Haute Horlogerie, it was the diamonds that got the legend of this brand started.
The Premier Hypnotic Star is one of the watches in the collection of Harry Winston that unites both these worlds in an unprecedented way. 84 baguette-cut diamonds are joined by 96 baguette-cut black spinels in a hypnotic, invisible setting. The level of craftsmanship needed to accomplish this is as impressive as the result is breathtaking. The star really seems to come out of the watch, an effect which is even amplified by the fire and scintillation of the diamonds.
The Histoire de Tourbillon series is going to have Harry Winston in trouble. Seeing how every iteration of the set of amazing legacy watches is becoming increasingly and more complicated every year, we are starting to wonder how on Earth will they manage to produce something that can up the ante from the preceding version. Nonetheless, it does not look like 2016 are the year that the Histoire De Tourbillon plateaued, with the debut of the downright galactic Harry Winston Histoire de Tourbillon 7 to Baselworld. So how, precisely, does one go about topping 2015’s eye-watering, $600,000 Tourbillon 6, that marveled with almost 700 components, two time indicators, an 80-hour energy reserve, and a tri-axial tourbillon — all housed in a titanic 55mm instance? Easy. You double down with not one, but two bi-axial tourbillons married by a round differential that averages their behavioral patterns relative to position and gravity to yield a stunning, synchronous ballet with time. Easy, right? On paper, the HW4502 movement may seem simpler, as it’s comprised of just a hair over 500 components and 84 jewels. Additionally, this newest version doesn’t contain quite as many different complications as the Tourbillon 6. Also, it’s still about precisely the exact same size as your (above-average-sized) contemporary wristwatch, in 43.5 millimeter wide and 8.65 millimeter thick — and again, these are the measurements of just the movement alone! Anyhow, that notable decrease in part count seems to have enabled the Harry Winston Histoire de Tourbillon 7’s movement engineers to focus on the technical wizardry behind carrying a single tourbillon complication with two axes of diverse trajectories that drive the escapements, and doubling it — a clinically calculated feat Winston describes was achieved with “outstanding technical strength.” Sounds about Perfect.
With 36mm is the size of the Premier Hypnotic Star perfect. It remains elegant, yet is at the same time large enough to show off the dazzling dial of this timekeeper. To balance this brilliance somewhat, Harry Winston also opted to set the case with While this size will be comfortable to wear for most women, the design of the lugs will even increase this further. It holds a black satin strap which closes with a white gold ardillon buckle, set with an additional 28 baguette-cut diamonds, adding another 1.15 carats to the already impressive total carat weight of the watch, which totals just over the 15 carats.
Also, the backside of the Premier Hypnotic Star is a gem. Powered by automatic caliber HW2008, we are treated to circular Côtes de Genève and, less noticeable, a flat silicon balance spring. While the movement is not the main attraction of the watch, it does show that Harry Winston is serious about its ladies watches to fit them with a high-end, refined automatic caliber, and that just happens to be the icing on the cake.
